20 May 2025 by Alan Brewer Leave a Comment

As the sun continued to shine, this week was all about getting our food budget back on track. Between long workdays, lots of driving, and the summer heat, it wasn’t the easiest—but coming home to delicious home-cooked meals made it all worthwhile.

We also treated ourselves to something we haven’t had in ages: a cheeky Chinese takeaway! I couldn’t resist my usual order—Salt & Pepper King Prawns, Chicken Chow Mein, Egg Fried Rice, and Crispy Seaweed. Of course, there were other favourites too, like Chinese Chicken Curry and Salt & Pepper Chicken Strips. Yum.

💷 Weekly Food Budget Breakdown

Our family food budget target is £150 per week, which includes groceries and toiletries. This week? Slightly over, but much improved—and considering the tasty moments, we’re calling it a win.

  • 🛒 Food Shop Total: £157.11
  • 🍟 Takeaways & Treats: £44.05
  • 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Daily Spend Per Person: £5.74

Yes, it’s our lowest spend in a while and when you compare it to the joy and full bellies, its always a budget-friendly victory.

📊 How We Stack Up Against the UK Average

Based on 2024 figures, the average UK family of five spends about £210 per week on food and non-alcoholic drinks. Even with our splurge, we’re still well under that.

Budgeting isn’t just about cutting costs—it’s about getting creative and making it work for your lifestyle.

🍽 What We Ate This Week

Here’s a peek at our family menu—simple, budget-friendly meals with a few fun twists:

  • Monday: Chicken Biryani
  • Tuesday: Takeaway Tuesday – Chinese Night
  • Wednesday: Taco Bell–Style Crunch Wraps
  • Thursday: One-Pan Chicken, Broccoli & Sweet Potato Bake
  • Friday: Chicken Tikka Masala (Microwave Meal Night)
