Real food. Real costs. Real family life.
Hey, I’m Alan — the cook, dad, and budget obsessive behind Looks Good Let’s Eat.
I’m one half of a busy household of five: me, my fiancée, three brilliant kids, and a rotating cast of pets who all seem to think they deserve a second dinner too. Life is loud, schedules are packed, and the weekly food shop has never felt more expensive. Sound familiar?
That’s exactly why this blog exists.
What Makes This Place Different
Every recipe here is tried, tested, and costed — because knowing a dish tastes good is only half the job. You deserve to know what it’ll actually cost to put on the table.
You won’t find aspirational food for aspirational budgets here. You’ll find:
Recipes that work in the real world — no specialist equipment, no obscure ingredients, no faff
Honest recipe costs — I break down what each meal costs to make, using everyday supermarket ingredients
Monthly budget breakdowns — I share exactly what our family of five spends on food each month, and how it compares to the UK average
Practical money-saving tips — small, realistic changes that actually make a difference to your weekly shop
Why I Started This
Like a lot of families, we’ve had to get smarter about what we spend on food. But I refused to let “eating on a budget” mean eating badly. Good food — proper, satisfying, delicious food — should be something everyone can afford.
So I started documenting what we actually cook, what it actually costs, and how we actually manage the food budget week to week. What started as notes for myself turned into something I hope genuinely helps other families do the same.
A Bit More About Me
I’m an ex-Army chef but not a trained nutritionist — just a parent who loves cooking, cares about value, and gets genuinely excited about a cracking midweek meal that comes in under four quid.
I draw inspiration from cookbooks, food I grew up with, and cuisines I’m still exploring. When a recipe is adapted from someone else’s work, I always credit them — good food is meant to be shared, not hoarded.
You’re in the Right Place If…
You want to cook well without overspending
You’re tired of recipe blogs that ignore the cost of living
You cook for a family and need meals that actually please everyone
You want to feel more in control of your food budget without it becoming a chore
Pull up a chair. Let’s eat well — and spend wisely.
