Budgeting our Culinary Adventures: No Secrets, Just Honesty

3 March 2025 by Alan Brewer Leave a Comment

This is the second week of tracking our weekly food budget, and since it’s the end of the month, I’ve also done a four-week breakdown below (covering weeks 6 to 9). I’ll be keeping this up each week, following on from last week’s first post.

What Did We Eat This Week?

Honestly, it was a manic week with not much home cooking happening! But here’s what we managed:

  • Monday: Tomato Soup & Rolls
  • Tuesday: Baked Korma Spatchcock Chicken with Garlic Raita
  • Wednesday: Greek Turkey Burgers & Harissa Yoghurt
  • Thursday: Macaroni (Cauliflower) Cheese
  • Friday: Takeaway
  • Saturday: Food at the Football / Brit Awards
  • Sunday: Roast Chicken Dinner

Weekend Highlights – Football, The Brits & Family Time

It was a busy end to the week! My fiancée went to the Brit Awards with one of our daughters, while our other daughter was with her dad. We always try to plan special moments with the kids, so she’ll have a girly weekend next time.

As for me and our son, Friday night was cinema night—we watched Captain America: Brave New World. He’s a huge Marvel fan and loved it! Then, on Saturday, we went to see Barnsley vs. Lincoln City, which turned into an absolute thriller. We won 4-3, but after throwing away a 4-1 lead, it was edge-of-your-seat stuff! Hopefully, we can push into the play-offs—come on, The Tykes!

Food at the Football – Worth It?

I had the classic pie and Bovril, but before kickoff, I tried loaded fries for £7—honestly, not a bad deal!

Weekly Food Budget Recap

  • Food Shop: £167.73 (including toiletries)
  • Guilt-Free Food (Takeaways & Treats): £120.54 (mostly from football and the Brits weekend)
  • Daily Food Cost per Person: £8.23 – not bad, considering most of the spend was on weekend activities.

Monthly Breakdown (Weeks 6–9)

  • Food Shop: £162.30 (including toiletries)
  • Guilt-Free Food: £433.91 (big-ticket spends: date night, football, the Brits, and that huge takeaway for eight!)

Overall, I’m happy with our weekly food shop goal of £150 or less—we were just over, including toiletries, so I’ll take that! The Guilt-Free Food budget was high, but with big events, it was expected.
