Come and join me on creating a friendly space showcasing awesome recipes, menu planning and ideas that we as a family use.
This is the first blog of the new Looks Good Lets Eat. This platform will share family weekly meals and their costs each week. Meals will be shared on social media along with recipes and costings for all the meals.
I aim to share a weekly video (when I gather enough courage) detailing our meal planning, alongside a blog post and monthly summary. My goal is to show that great food on a budget is possible. Each post will include our food expenses to demonstrate how savings can be achieved throughout the year so these can be used for treating yourself and your family.
The weekly blog post started on the 17th Feb 2024.
This week started with the celebration of my fiancée’s birthday. Although the celebratory night out was on the previous Saturday (15th), a birthday is not complete without cake.

As my fiancée is following a ketogenic diet, I looked up keto friendly cake recipes and found several that sounded and looked amazing, but I wanted to keep the cake as simple as possible with easy-to-get ingredients. I finally decided by making a Peanut Butter Chocolate Cake using recipes from Katie’s Chocolate Covered Katie and Carolyn’s All Day I Dream About Food.
The result was outstanding, and I had one very happy fiancée; but it never stopped there as her daughter was with her dad for the holidays and as such more cake was needed for her return. For this I made some Chocolate Brownies, both Keto and normal. The normal ones had some bramble jam dolloped in before baking which added an extra layer of sweetness. The Keto brownies were normal chocolate and also from Chocolate Covered Katie. Thankyou Katie and Carolyn for some awesome Keto recipes.
The end of the week concluded with our Mum staying which is always lovely. This was also the weekend where we go out as a family and find a lovely walk for us to embark upon. This month we decided to go to Lathkill Dale near Bakewell. The walk was lovely worth some stunning rivers and small waterfalls with the end of the walk having some tremendous views, despite the thin path at the edge of the hillside; twitchy bum time for sure especially as our Poppy pulls like you would not believe.
For the weeks meals it went something like this.
Monday: Chicken Nugget and Chips (for the Kids) and Sirloin Steak with Charred Iceberg Lettuce with a Blue Cheese Dressing and Crispy Bacon

Tuesday: Pasta Bolognese (Broccoli version for my Fiancee) with Garlic Bread

Wednesday: Chicken Wrapped in Bacon topped with Mozzarella and BBQ Sauce
Thursday: Enchiladas
Friday: Indian Night (Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala, Naan Bread, Pilau Rice and Spiced Cauliflower

Saturday: Take-Away
Sunday: Roast Pork Dinner

As for a cost breakdown, this was one of our (very) expensive weeks in comparison especially with the take-away.
Food Shop: £173.06 (including our toiletries)
Take-Away: £78.23. Which was for eight of us.
Food cost per head this week was £4.95 which actually does not seem too bad.
