This Week’s Budget Round-Up: Kids on Holiday, Work in Full Swing

23 April 2025 by Alan Brewer Leave a Comment

It’s that time of year again—school’s out, the kids are buzzing with energy, and somehow, the work keeps piling up. This week marked the start of the Easter holidays for the kids, and while I wasn’t off just yet (counting down to this week!), my fiancée managed to grab a couple of days to spend quality time with them—thankfully giving them a much-needed break from screens.

One of the highlights? A family day out with the in-laws to Spurn Point. We went on a mini fossil hunt (with little success) but honestly, the sunny weather and watching the kids run wild on the beach was all the treasure we needed.

💷 Weekly Food Budget Recap

Our monthly goal stays steady at £150 per week, including toiletries. So how did we fare this time?

Weekly Food Shop: £206.81

Takeaways & Treats: £44.64

Daily Cost Per Person: £7.18

Yep—we went over. Between an unplanned BBQ, a cheeky McDonald’s run, and a Friday night Chinese takeaway, we leaned into the holiday vibes more than the budget this week.

And you know what? That’s okay. It’s all about balance.

To put it in perspective, the average UK household spends around £42 per person per week on groceries. For a family of five, that’s roughly £210/week—so even with the overspend, we’re still in line with the national average, and well under when averaged out monthly.

🍽 What We Ate This Week

Keeping things easy and comforting was the name of the game:

  • Monday: Bangers & Mash
  • Tuesday: McDonald’s
  • Wednesday: Chicken & Broccoli Stir-Fry
  • Thursday: Creamy Garlic Chicken
  • Friday: Chinese Takeaway
  • Saturday: Family BBQ
  • Sunday: Jacket Potatoes with Cheese, Beans & Coleslaw (Omelette for my fiancée)

Sometimes you just need a fuss-free food week—and that’s exactly what we had.
